It is my pleasure to extend a warm welcome on behalf of the Dr. Franjo Tuđman Defense and Security University (hereinafter: SOIS FT), established as a higher education and scientific-research institution supporting the homeland security and defense system of the Republic of Croatia. UDS FT continues the educational tradition previously led by the Croatian Defense Academy and the Intelligence Academy, both of which were founded upon the knowledge and needs that emerged during the Homeland War in the pursuit of independence and sovereignty of the Republic of Croatia.
Considering the complex global security dynamics and the many challenges we have faced throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, SOIS FT represents the realisation of Croatia’s strategic goal to build a scientific, educational, and research institution. Through its capacities, knowledge, and academic excellence, SOIS FT aims to provide essential support to the homeland security and defense system. In this spirit, the University will continue to develop its programmes in accordance with clearly identified needs, defined through direct communication with institutions, organisations, and both public and private sectors who will benefit from our graduates. SOIS FT will promote critical thinking, scientific excellence, openness, and inclusivity — all in line with its motto: Sapere Aude et Agere (Dare to think and act).
The core mission of SOIS FT is the education and training of expert personnel, equipped and recognised for their contribution within the Croatian homeland security and defense system. A professional approach to learning and knowledge dissemination, a high standard of academic quality, and strong international cooperation based on shared European political and security values are the foundations of the University.
Excellence, international recognition, and scientific and professional relevance in the Euro-Atlantic and global context can only be achieved through the individuals who make up the academic community. Therefore, SOIS FT will work to strengthen personal and collective responsibility, inclusiveness, and awareness of the values, principles, and beliefs that safeguarded and built the modern Croatian state during the Homeland War.
SOIS FT will actively promote and develop its research capabilities, primarily through the work of the Institute for Security and Defense Studies. Experts within the Institute will support strategic analysis of security challenges and processes confronting the Republic of Croatia, as a responsible member of the European Union and NATO. With the aim of advancing scientific and professional research, SOIS FT will continue its current practice of encouraging the publication of research findings. Scientific journals such as Strategos and National Security and the Future will remain at the heart of our academic and publishing activity.
Technological advancement, modernisation, and globalisation processes directly influence the acquisition and dissemination of knowledge. International cooperation is both a goal and necessity for SOIS FT, as no institution today can face contemporary and future security challenges alone — without partners, friends, and allies. International projects and collaborations are key strategic priorities. Through high levels of academic and non-academic mobility, participation in European research and development projects, and partnerships across the Euro-Atlantic region, SOIS FT is achieving global relevance and setting European standards of excellence in military-defense and security-intelligence sciences and arts. This not only strengthens the security shield of the Republic of Croatia, but also that of the European Union and NATO as a whole.
