Historical Overview

Alongside the Intelligence Academy (ObAk), established in 1998, the St. George Association began paving the way for academically opening intelligence and security affairs to the broader public. As part of this mission, the journal National Security and Future was launched as a scientific project. In October 2000, the editorial board held its first meeting in Dubrovnik, attended by prominent scholars from the United States and Europe, as well as former directors or deputy directors of intelligence-security agencies from countries such as the USA, Russia, Czech Republic, former East Germany, and Bulgaria.

The minutes and content from that roundtable are available at: https://www.nsf-journal.hr/NSF-Volumes/Focus/id/1084/round-table-on---intelligence-and-national-security-at-the-beginning-of-the-21st-centurybrvolume-1-number-3-4--autumn-winter-2000. It was the first meeting where leading experts from intelligence communities—once fierce Cold War adversaries—sat at the same table. Thanks to Miroslav Tuđman's reputation, perspectives, and communication skills, he successfully brought together people who had recently regarded each other as enemies, giving them a unique chance to meet in person for the first time.

Later on, editorial board members included experts from Hungary, France, and Slovenia.

The first issue of the journal was published in April 2000, at a time when no national or international journals in Central and Southeast Europe covered the field of national security.

Since its inception, the journal’s core ambition has been to explore and understand intelligence practice, enhance the theory and methodology of intelligence work, identify threats, strengthen trust between leaderships of different intelligence-security services by encouraging understanding and cooperation, and contribute to the study and comprehension of national security. One of the main motivations behind founding the journal was to support the development of a new academic field dedicated to intelligence and national security as a distinct and recognised scientific discipline.

Alongside other domestic journals, National Security and Future significantly enhances international visibility of both Croatian and foreign experts. Its consistent publication contributes to the dissemination and networking of knowledge, integration of new insights into Croatian academic and professional circles, and the overall development of information and communication sciences, social sciences, and security-intelligence studies and practices.
