Military Engineering
The Military Engineering study programme is an interdisciplinary programme and the first university programme of its kind in the Republic of Croatia, making it unique in the job market within the public sector, such as defense and the armed forces, as well as in rescue and protection of people and property, civil protection, and other institutions that support civil entities in crisis situations, natural disasters, or technological incidents. The undergraduate university programme in Military Engineering is delivered by Dr. Franjo Tuđman Defense and Security University in cooperation with the constituent units of the University of Zagreb and Croatian Military Academy “Dr Franjo Tuđman”.
This programme is particularly suitable for those aiming to build a career in defense and security, contribute to the modernisation and maintenance of military systems, and enhance national security and participation in international missions. During their studies, cadets acquire advanced technical knowledge, the ability to solve complex engineering problems under challenging conditions, as well as leadership and command skills. Thanks to its multidisciplinary educational approach, this programme provides a solid foundation for work within the Croatian Armed Forces, the Ministry of Defense, civil protection services, and in rescue and technical support sectors during crisis scenarios.
ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND COMPETENCIES
Knowledge, skills, and competencies in military engineering are essential at both national and international levels – ranging from technical modernisation, maintenance, and overhaul of combat systems and weapon systems, fire protection systems and equipment, to ships and aircraft, and participation in international missions and operations in logistics and technical support roles.
The Military Engineering programme provides the acquisition of knowledge, skills, and competencies in accordance with international standards and NATO guidelines, and is intended for the education of future officers of the Ministry of Defense and the Croatian Armed Forces.
DURATION AND ORGANISATION OF STUDY
The undergraduate Military Engineering programme lasts for 8 semesters. In the second year, cadets are assigned to one of the major groups: Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or CBRN Defense. In the third year, they specialise further into branches. The Mechanical Engineering group divides into Armour, Artillery, Engineering Corps, and Technical Services. The Electrical Engineering group divides into Communications, Surveillance and Guidance, and Air Defense.
MILITARY PRACTICAL TRAINING AND CAMPS
An integral part of the programme includes military practical training and field camps during which cadets develop leadership, command, and supervisory skills, weapon handling, shooting, maintenance of firearms, and orientation in terrain and surroundings.
ACADEMIC TITLE AND FURTHER STUDIES
Upon completing the undergraduate programme, students earn 240 ECTS credits and are awarded the academic title university bachelor of military engineering (univ. bacc. ing. milit.).
After completing the undergraduate Military Engineering programme, students may enrol in the graduate Military Engineering programme. The graduate programme lasts two semesters, and upon completion, students earn 60 ECTS credits and are awarded the academic title university master of military engineering (univ. mag. ing. milit.).
