The Military Naval Studies programme provides students with theoretical and practical knowledge, as well as an understanding of professional and scientific principles and procedures essential for the maritime profession. The programme develops maritime skills necessary for ship management: navigation, manoeuvring, maintenance, cargo handling, and other procedures governed by the International Convention (STCW) and other international and national standards. The general competencies acquired by cadets upon completion of the Military Naval Studies programme are equivalent to those obtained at other maritime faculties.
The integrated undergraduate and graduate university study programme in Military Naval Studies, with two modules – Naval Navigation and Naval Engineering – is offered by Dr. Franjo Tuđman Defense and Security University, in cooperation with the constituent units of the University of Split: the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Maritime Studies, the Faculty of Science, and the Croatian Military Academy “Dr. Franjo Tuđman”.
The programme is designed to educate future officers of the Ministry of Defense and the Armed Forces of the Republic of Croatia. It also supports education for the needs of the Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure, as well as the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Croatia.
Duration and structure of the programme
The Military Naval Studies programme lasts ten semesters and includes two modules (Naval Navigation and Naval Engineering). Upon completion, students acquire at least 300 ECTS credits and the academic title University Master of Military Naval Engineering, specialising in Naval Navigation or Naval Engineering (univ. mag. ing. nav. milit.).
Military and nautical training
During military practice, students gain skills in leadership, command, supervision, handling of personal firearms, shooting and weapon maintenance, as well as spatial orientation.
Through nautical training and daily shipboard activities, students become familiar with life and work on board. Practical training is conducted on Croatian Navy vessels and other state-operated ships.
Course delivery
The integrated undergraduate study programme in Military Naval Studies is provided by Dr. Franjo Tuđman Defense and Security University, in cooperation with the University of Zagreb and the Croatian Military Academy “Dr. Franjo Tuđman”.
Teaching is delivered by lecturers from Dr. Franjo Tuđman Defense and Security University, the University of Split, and by military experts and instructors from the Croatian Military Academy and the Ministry of Defense.
Classes are held in specialised classrooms and laboratories at the “Admiral flote Sveto Letica-Barba” Barracks – Naval Base “Lora” in Split and at the Faculty of Maritime Studies.
